Estonia’s energy sector is undergoing a dynamic period.
Many earlier plans have been reassessed and new strategies are being developed.

The recent decision to drop the targets of achieving 100% renewable electricity by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050 does not diminish the central role of renewables in the country’s energy transition. Supported by significant investments in energy storage, Estonia aims to install 1,000 MW of storage capacity by 2030 and more than 1,500 MW by 2040.

The Energy Development Plan projects 1,500 MW of solar capacity by 2030 and over 2,500 MW by 2040, with potential to reach 3.5 GW by 2050 if large-scale battery systems are deployed. The government is currently reviewing a bill that would authorise Estonia’s transmission system operator, Elering, to carry out a reverse auction to bring onshore wind-generated electricity to market.

To ensure energy security and system balance, Estonia is also advancing a hydrogen strategy focused on green hydrogen production and use, while exploring nuclear energy as a stable complement to intermittent renewables.

Future Energy Forum Estonia convenes key stakeholders across the energy ecosystem. Previous participants included Ministry of Energy and the Environment, Estonian Competition Authority (Konkurentsiamet), teams from energy generators: Utilitas, Elektrum Eesti, Enefit, Ignitis, energy trader Elenger, experts from Estonian TSO Elering and DSO Elektrilevi, developers and IPPs” Sunly, Evencon and other companies.

The event is also well-attended by local and international investors – EIB, BaltCap, INVL, Talleri, SEB Bank, Swedbank – and project sponsors, offtakers like Alexela and Eestii Energia, energy systems OEMs, and service providers – creating a broad platform to shape the country’s evolving energy future.
