Hungary’s Wind Market Reopens

The change of government under Prime Minister Péter Magyar has resulted in the most significant shift in Hungarian onshore wind policy in more than a decade. After years in which wind development was effectively frozen, the new government has made wind a strategic pillar of its energy security agenda.

With the new government positioning wind as a key part of its energy security strategy, Hungary aims to add 4 GW of onshore wind capacity by 2030 — more than ten times its current installed base of around 330 MW.

Capacity will be allocated through competitive auctions. For investors and developers, Hungary offers a new growth market, although delivery will depend on grid expansion, bankable support mechanisms and faster permitting.

WINDMission Hungary Conference & Exhibition takes place on 22 October 2027 at Budapest.

The conference examines the technical challenges of integrating onshore and offshore wind energy generation, inverter-based resources, energy storage, flexibility services, cybersecurity and digital substations, digital twins and AI-enabled grid management while maintaining grid stability, reliability and resilience.
